An intervention team has been appointed by the National Department of Health to assist Gauteng in managing the surge in COVID-19 cases in the province.
That's according to acting Health Minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane who was speaking at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital vaccination site in Soweto, on Saturday, 12 June 2021.
Kubayi-Ngubane was accompanied by Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, MEC for Health, Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi, MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Lebogang Maile and City of Johannesburg Mayor, Jeff Makhubo.
She said the team will assist with human capital.
"We will be sending an intervention team to Gauteng that will assist with human capital, to support the province in managing the pandemic," she said,
South Africa has recorded over 8 000 new COVID-19 infections with Gauteng topping the list with 60% of positive cases as of 11 June 2021.
Most of the infections have been reported in all three metros.
Premier David Makhura said the province would welcome the intervention as the spike in cases requires support from the national department.
Makhura said there are already reports from private sector that the health system is under pressure.
"There is pressure in the private healthcare facilities and that pressure is now shifting to the public health facilities. We can feel that pressure based on the hospital admissions," added Makhura.
The Chris Hani Baragwanath vaccination site has extended its working hours and is now operational 7 days a week to ramp up vaccination in the province.
"This is a massive step towards assisting us in increasing the number of vaccinations of our population of 60 plus together with our health care workers," said Minister Kubayi-Ngubane.
