MEC Jacob Mamabolo has expressed his appreciation on the increasing use of the PotholeFixingGP Application (App) since its launch on Saturday, 28 May 2022.
He announced that over 4000 downloads were recorded and was pleased with the uptake.
"Since its launch two weeks ago, we are pleased with the take up, seeing that more people are downloading and using the App. More than 4000 people have, so far, downloaded the App and are putting it to use," said the MEC.
The App is an integral part of tools identified in the Department's Growing Gauteng Through Smart Mobility 2030 Strategy to leverage the deployment of smart technologies to improve delivery. 
At a click of a button, the app allows road users to report potholes in various parts of the province. It was developed in partnership with Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to make roads safer for users. The user-friendly features enable road users to take a picture of the pothole, record the location and notify the Department. Using the information, the Department is also able to refer reported potholes to individual municipalities for attention. The platform also provides updates on issues reported
The app is currently available on the Android platform. "Since its launch, we have received the first set of data which gives us insights into maintenance challenges on our roads," added the MEC.
He alluded to the importance of the data received in planning and allocation of resources. "This data is very important as it provides us with a sample of the maintenance work required, assists us to plan better on resources deployment. This ensures that resources, human and material, are made available where they are needed most".
Over the past two weeks, a total of 728 defects were logged. 73 defects were reported on provincial roads and 650 on municipal roads. Below is the breakdown:
City of Joburg - 239; 
City of Ekurhuleni – 172; 
City of Tshwane - 137;
Emfuleni Local Municipality – 39;
Mogale City – 32; 
RandWest City Local Municipality – 21;
Lesedi and Merafong Local – 01 each. 
"The partnership with municipalities continues as we work closely to attend to those defects reported through the App to their maintenance teams," added Mamabolo. 
Monthly updates on data collected through the App will be made available to the public to promote transparency and accountability.
