Gogo Khosi Obose, a proud member of Team Gauteng, expressed her gratitude to the government for ensuring that senior citizens could still enjoy themselves at the National Golden Games despite the rainy weather.
The 65-year-old from Johannesburg shared that her team was well-prepared to compete and showcase their talent, but the bad weather disrupted some of the planned activities. However, thanks to the alternative arrangements made by government officials, the games continued, allowing older persons to remain active and engaged.
Affectionately known as 'Spider' on the field for her versatility, Obose applauded the officials for their dedication to the well-being of senior participants. As a member of Gauteng's women's soccer team, she emphasized their commitment to maintaining a healthy lifestyle through sports and was confident in their ability to defend the championship title they won in the previous year.
"Indeed, I enjoyed myself without a doubt. Although some activities were disrupted by the rain, we still had the opportunity to take part in others and have a great time," she said.
Obose highlighted the importance of the Golden Games in promoting active ageing, helping seniors stay fit, and preventing age-related chronic illnesses such as diabetes. She encouraged other senior citizens across the country to participate in the Active Ageing Programme, describing it as a valuable initiative that advocates for a healthy lifestyle among older persons.
"I hope that in the next edition of the Golden Games, we see an even greater number of elderly people participating, ensuring that no senior citizen is left behind. I would love to see more 'golden oldies' taking part because these games keep us healthy and strong," she added.
Obose also expressed a wish for additional incentives for participants who reach the finals, suggesting that winners could receive small tokens of appreciation beyond trophies and medals as further encouragement. "I don't know if it's possible, but I just wish the winners could receive something extra as motivation," she concluded.
