Department Empowers Social Workers Through Disability Awareness Workshop

Department of Social Development 2025/03/28 - 22:00

The Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD) remains committed to ensuring that Persons with Disabilities, one of the most marginalized and excluded groups in society, receive the support and services they deserve. Despite ongoing efforts, many individuals with Disabilities continue to face discrimination, negative attitudes, and inadequate access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and employment opportunities.

To address these challenges, the Special Needs and Services to Families Directorate hosted a two-day Provincial Workshop focused on understanding various types of Disabilities. The workshop, which brought together 150 Social Workers from both the NPO sector and the Department's Intake Unit, aimed to enhance their capacity to support Persons with Disabilities more effectively.

Portia Ngobeni, a Social Worker with GDSD, emphasized the critical role of the Intake Unit in facilitating access to services. "Since Intake Social Workers are the first point of contact for the Department, it is essential that they are well-informed about different types of Disabilities, reasonable accommodation for Persons with Disabilities, and proper referral channels for further assistance," she said.

The workshop also highlighted the significance of World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), observed annually on March 21st. Ronelle Sartor, General Manager at San Salvador Home for Intellectually Disabled Women, explained the significance of the date, saying, "People with Down Syndrome have three copies of chromosome 21, which symbolizes the genetic cause of the condition. WDSD serves as a global platform for advocating the rights, inclusion, and well-being of individuals with Down Syndrome. The United Nations officially recognized this day in 2012."

Recognizing March as Down Syndrome Awareness Month, the Departmental Disability Coordinators across Gauteng's five corridors are actively engaging in community radio interviews to raise awareness and promote greater inclusion and support for individuals with Down Syndrome.
