The Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD), along with various stakeholders, hosted Child Protection event on Friday, 24 May 2024 at the Mandela Community Hall in Hammanskraal.
This event was aimed at raising awareness about children's rights as enshrined in the Constitution and the Children’s Act (Act No. 38 of 2005).The program, themed “Protecting South African Children, 30 Years On,” included participation from children aged 12 to 15 from six local schools. It highlighted the significance of Child Protection Week, initially commemorated from May 29 to June 5, which has now evolved into a 365-day Programme of Action. This initiative calls for all spheres of government to collaborate in addressing and raising awareness about issues impacting children's daily lives.Mmakoto Morudu, a Social Worker with the Department, emphasized the importance of continuously educating children about child abuse. "Even though child abuse is taught in schools, it cannot be overemphasized. Children should frequently be reminded about the different types and effects of abuse. To end abuse, it is crucial to report it to relevant authorities, teachers, or a respected community elders."Sergeant Moeng, from Temba Police Station, advised learners to avoid a gangster lifestyle."Bad company leads to bad decision-making, and gangsterism often results in violence against rival groups. Avoid isolating yourself and surround yourself with friends who aspire to a better future."Sister Sambo from the Gauteng Department of Health's Mental Health division encouraged children to develop healthy habits, such as regular exercise and avoiding oily foods like kota or spahlo. She noted that these habits contribute to better academic performance and overall well-being.Other speakers included representatives from Hammanskraal Fire Station, SAPS Temba, and Correctional Services, with each providing valuable insights and advice on various aspects of child protection and safety.The Department continues to roll out the Child Protection awareness campaign throughout the province to create a safe and nurturing environment for all South African children.
