Gauteng Government has commended all residents who have been vaccinated for COVID-19 and thanked all sector leaders for their work in encouraging individuals to register for the vaccination.

COVID-19 vaccine provides the best chance of reducing the risk of new infection, severe illness, hospitalisation and death in the event one contracts COVID-19.

Celebrated actor, author, director and playwriter, John Kani, 77 received his COVID-19 vaccine at the Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital on Thursday, 27 May 2021.

Kani encouraged all those who are 60 years and older to register for vaccination as it is the only hope against COVID-19.

"All artists in my constituency and all the elders, please come get your vaccination it is the only way that guarantees that we continue to live and continue to serve our people and continue to be part of our families and extended families," said Kani.

The more people get vaccinated for COVID 19 the more the county gets closer to winning the fight against the pandemic.

Kani said the injection was not painful.

"I almost waited for the sister to tell me it's done because I thought she hasn't done it yet. It is incredibly important for all of us," said Kani.

He further encouraged people that when their turn comes to get vaccinated, they should do so.

"Come and get your vaccination it is important that we live, it's important that we support this effort of vaccination," said Kani

Government would also like to thank the general public for their patience and support during the roll out of the vaccination programmme.

People who are vaccinated against COVID-19 are encouraged to continue observing non-pharmaceutical interventions by wearing a mask, avoiding crowded places where possible and washing hands regularly using water and soap or an alcohol-based sanitizer.
