As part of government interventions in the fight against covid-19, Gauteng Department of Health identified Johannesburg Expo Centre formerly known as Nasrec, as one of the sites which will be used to accommodate positive patients.
This centre will assist hospitals in case the curve of new infections worsens and more facilities are required to accommodate patients.
This week, Gauteng Health MEC, Dr Bandile Masuku visited the centre which is expected to accommodate 2200 beds to check the state of readiness.
It has isolation rooms equipped with a bed, shower, toilet, basin and a panic button. For leisure, each room has a desk, chair and television.
The first phase of the plan which will be ready by the end of next week, accommodates 500 beds.
The second phase of the plan is a medical ward which will be used for more serious cases.
“We have sent a request for people who want to volunteer their skills to help in the facility and we anticipate positive response,”
“While the province prepares for any eventuality, we urge people to continue to observe the regulations of the lockdown,” Masuku said.
