Following the recent commemoration of SANCA Drug Awareness Week and to further emphasise the dangers of drug abuse, Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital spoke to the Clinical Preceptor based at the hospital, Vhonani Tshirando, on the psychological effects of drugs.
Tshirando from the hospital's female psychiatric ward said while both males and females are admitted due to drug and substance abuse, the prevalence is higher in males.
"Anyone can be a victim. Drug abuse has no age group, race nor sex, it does not regard financial, cultural, religious and social standing. It affects both educated or uneducated people. Whether you are famous or not, you can be a drug addict" said Tshirando.
Tshirando added that some of the commonly used and abused drugs are lysergic acid diethylamide, mandrax, nyaope, cocaine, dagga, ketamine (club drug), rohypnol and anabolic steroids.
According to Tshirando, substance abuse can result in various mental health illnesses and disorders such "borderline personality disorder, substance induced psychotic disorder, stimulant intoxication disorder, , schizophrenia and more."
Tshirando encouraged people to get help before it is too late, by contacting the substance abuse helpline on 0800121314 or alternatively send an SMS to 32312.
"One can also seek help from counselling and support groups. Rehabilitation services are another way to get help. You can also secure a 24- hour medical management, as an inpatient or be transferred to a highly programmed residential facility for help" added Tshirando.
