Human Trafficking can happen anywhere at any time, there is no specific place where it takes place, and anyone can be trafficked. That's according to the West Rand Region Social Worker, Sindiswa Nkosi, who was speaking on dangers of human trafficking during an interview at Westside community radio station. 
Nkosi explained to listeners that human trafficking is involuntary and classified as complex and multi-layered crime, which includes a range of issues such as migration, syndicates, drug cartels and exploitation. It is about human beings who are threatened, intimidated, brutalized, exploited and often killed for profit. The victims are usually trafficked for the purpose of sexual exploitation, forced labour, slavery, servitude; removal of body parts, illegal adoptions, force marriages and drug tracking", she said.
Nkosi added that victims could consent to move to another country under false pretences. Some are trafficked through job advertisements on newspapers where the perpetrators will say people are needed for job with no experience. Furthermore, they will be lured by a promise to earn more money overseas or cross-province. She appealed to the listeners to be more vigilant and take care of their children when they go to school and coming back. 
The department is mandated to assist trafficking victims in a range of ways: identification of victims, assessing, care and accommodation, psychosocial support, family reunification, inter-sectoral or inter-provincial collaboration for trafficking in persons cases, awareness and training. To date the department has embarked on several processes to achieve its mandate. 
At the end of the interview Nkosi encouraged listeners to report any suspicious activities related to human trafficking to the police and department by calling 0800 222 777. 
The department rolled out similar campaign in TUT, Sosh, Jozi, Eldos, Cosmo, Thetha, Lekoa, Sedibeng, Alex and Kasie FM.
