Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Lebohang Maile, has directed officials to prioritise the re-construction of the Mhlahla family home in Atteridgeville, Tshwane .
MEC Maile visited the family on Saturday, 10 April 2021, where he also made a commitment with the contractor that the construction of the house would be completed within the next two months.
MEC Maile further apologised on behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government and condemned the delay by the officials to attend to the family's plight.
"We apologise as the provincial government, there is no family that must endure the pain they have gone through, what has happened is unfortunate and uncalled-for," he said.
The Mahlala's house was accidentally demolished by the Red Ants in 2017 and since then they have been fighting to get help. The family got their chance to air their grievances when the MEC was in Saulsville for inspection of various vaccine sites last week.
MEC Maile further thanked M. Kona Consulting Engineers for their selfless act and willingness to give back to the community.
"The family would have not been happy with the RDP house because their house was not an RDP house, they had built the house themselves. We have then asked a sponsorship from M. Kona Consulting Engineers who adhered and respond positively," he said.
Family spokesperson Lindiwe Toheed, 33, said they are grateful with the quick response to their cry.
"We are happy as a family that the MEC has prioritised our call, MEC didn't even finish 24 hours before he could respond to our cry," said Toheed
The MEC said they asked the Head of the Department (HoD) to take disciplinary actions against officials who caused delays with the re-construction.
