The Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko has called for greater multi-sectoral collaboration in the implementation of the HIV, TB & STIs' response in the province.

Speaking at the launch of the Johannesburg Aids Council in Patterson Park in Norwood, the MEC commended the role civil society organisations continue to play. "Your grassroots connections enable us to address stigma, improve service delivery and empower communities to take charge of their health."

MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko said that while the province and the country reflects on progress made in ensuring equitable access to prevention, treatment and support services under the theme, "Equal Rights, Equal Care," as part of World Aids Day it is important to also acknowledge the challenges that still remain.

"HIV infections among young people remain a concern while stigma and discrimination continue to hinder access to care. This means that achieving targets like the 95-95-95 requires renewed commitment and innovation," stated MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko, emphasising the role played by district Aids Councils in mobilising various sectors.

The Councils provide strategic guidance, coordinate multi-sectoral interventions ensuring that the five districts that form part of the Gauteng Aids Council remain at the forefront of innovation and responsiveness in addressing HIV/AIDS challenges.

Johannesburg is the third district Aids Council to be established after Ekurhuleni and West Rand launched theirs. Sedibeng and Tshwane Aids Councils are expected to be launched during this month of December.
