Gauteng Provincial Government has successfully administered more than 5.6 million vaccines so far, with over 2.7 million fully vaccinated.
About 3.7 million people received one dose of either J&J or Pfizer.
Despite the progress in the vaccination programme, health experts warn that the country might experience the fourth wave as soon as November 2021.
Health MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi said with about 30% of the adult population vaccinated, efforts continue to ensure that as many people as possible are vaccinated.
Since 30 August 2021 the province embarked on an intense 14-week drive targeting areas with low vaccine uptake.
Mokgethi said the province needs 70% or more of the adult population to be vaccinated so that we can minimise the impact of the fourth wave and avoid stricter restrictions.
"Last year we could not safely visit our grandparents and loved ones over the festive season due to the pandemic. Let's make this year different and help build a healthier future for all."
The vaccination is more accessible, and all eligible people can get their jabs at various sites, such as mobile pop-up sites, taxi ranks, vaccination sites, and workplaces.
"It is now extremely important to increase the rate of vaccination especially in the age groups that are more vulnerable to contract severe disease. We have to accelerate the rate of vaccination in view of the looming fourth wave," said Mokgethi.
As of 20 October, the vaccination programme has been expanded to include children aged 12 to 17.
Nationally, a total of 38,800 children received the jab. Of these, 15 573 of the jabs were in Gauteng.
Parents, caregivers and legal guardians are encouraged to assist eligible young people to register and accompany them when they present themselves at vaccination sites.
Parents are urged to have open discussions with children about the benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine to help them make an informed health choice.
As at 21 October, the province recorded a total of 74 new COVID-19 infections.
Despite the low number of new cases, the province warned that COVID-19 is still in our midst and people should guard against complacency.
"As we prepare to vote in the upcoming Local Government Elections, we must do everything within our means to prevent the resurgence of COVID-19 infections."
