The St John Eye Clinic at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital has been commended for its dedication to public service and clinical excellence following the successful surgery of Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, on Thursday, 4 September 2025.

Led by a team of predominantly young medical professionals, the procedure highlighted the growing expertise and innovation within South Africa's public health sector. The Minister's surgery not only marks a personal health milestone but also serves as a strong endorsement of the quality of care available in public healthcare facilities.

St John Eye Clinic is one of the country's leading government-run eye care centres, offering specialised treatment for a wide range of conditions including retinal disorders, glaucoma, and corneal diseases. Equipped with advanced diagnostic and surgical technologies, the clinic provides high-quality care to thousands of patients annually, many of whom rely solely on public health services.

Following the procedure, Minister Motsoaledi urged South Africans to prioritise regular eye examinations, emphasising the importance of early detection in preventing serious conditions such as cataracts and glaucoma, which can lead to avoidable vision loss or blindness if left untreated.

"Eye health is a critical part of overall well-being. I urge everyone to take advantage of the services available at our public health facilities and get their eyes tested regularly," said Minister Motsoaledi.

As part of Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the largest hospital in the Southern Hemisphere, St John Eye Clinic plays a vital role in both patient care and medical training, helping to shape the next generation of ophthalmologists.

Minister Motsoaledi's successful surgery stands as a testament to the strength of South Africa's public healthcare system and underscores the importance of preventive care and early intervention.

MEC for Health and Wellness, Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, praised the Minister for leading by example and encouraged other public officials to follow suit by using public health services, even when covered by medical aid.

"I urge all public office bearers to make use of our health facilities. We have world-class infrastructure, cutting-edge medical technology, and highly skilled professionals ready to serve.

"Whenever I need to update my lenses, I go to our public facilities - and I make sure to pay using my medical aid," said the MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko.
