Premier Makhura condemns senseless tavern killings

Gauteng Premier, David Makhura has condemned the tavern shootings which left fifteen (15) dead and eight (8) injured in Nomzamo Informal Settlement, Orlando East, Soweto, and two (2) dead while four (4) were injured in Katlehong. 

In the early hours of Sunday, 10 July 2022, a group of men armed with rifles and 9mm pistols entered the tavern and started shooting randomly at the patrons in Orlando East.  Twenty-three (23) people were shot, 12 of whom were declared dead on the scene, while 11 were rushed to a nearby hospital. Three more were later declared dead at the hospital.

It has also been reported that the in East Rand, Katlehong, a similar incident took place where four armed men entered an establishment known as Mputlane Inn Tavern on Friday night, 8 July 2022 and began shooting randomly at patrons. Six people were shot, with two declared dead on the scene and others were taken to the nearest hospital to be treated for injuries.

On behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government, Makhura extended condolences to all families affected and those who have lost their loved ones also wished a speedy recovery to those who were injured.

"We condemn, in the strongest terms possible the senseless killing of so many people.  We call on the law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested and brought to book," said Premier Makhura.

He said the provincial government was deeply shocked, concerned, and saddened by this brutal assassination of innocent residents.

"We cannot allow incidents like this where innocent people are killed like animals.  This kind of behaviour has no place in this province," said Premier.
