Vaccination drive for people aged between 18 and 35 has kicked off with a great start in Gauteng today.
This follows the Cabinet announcement on Thursday, 19 August, that people aged between 18 and 35 can register on the Electronic Vaccination Data System to get vaccinated.
Gomolemo Khosa, 20, from Johannesburg could not wait to receive her first jab.
"The injection wasn't that painful at all; my arm is just a bit sore but I'm going to be fine. Anyone must just go and get vaccinated, it will help us in the future," said Gomolemo after receiving her jab at the Power FM vaccination site in Houghton Estate.
She had a good experience and urged other young people to get the vaccine.
Gomolemo joins millions of people around the world have taken the vaccines. In Gauteng, by Thursday, 2 494 253 people were vaccinated.
To ramp up the vaccination drive, the province has increased the vaccination sites that operate during weekends to accommodate the upcoming troop.
"We have expanded vaccination drive across the province, to ensure that persons 18 years and older are not left out," said the Provincial government in a statement
Government is also engaging with various economic sectors to set up vaccination sites in their workplaces to vaccinate employees and communities where they operate.
Together with the taxi association has launched a vaccination drive at a pop-up site at Baragwanath Taxi Rank in Soweto, Johannesburg to ramp up vaccination of commuters and taxi drivers.
The programme will be soon rolled out in other taxi ranks across the province.
South Africa has been survived three coronavirus waves, infecting at least 2.65 million people, killing 78,000.
The National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) said 13 672 new infections were recorded on Thursday 19 August taking the country's total Covid-19 case count to 2 652 652.
On Thursday 317 people have so far succumbed to Covid-19-related illnesses, taking South Africa's total death count to 78 694.
Persons who are 18 years and older are encouraged to visit their nearest vaccination sites and get vaccinated.END
