Department of Social Development 2024/10/25 - 22:00

Gauteng Social Development MEC, Faith Mazibuko, called on young people to draw inspiration from the life of 105-year-old Gogo Makhopokoane Jermina Matlepe, born on 14 December 1918, in Steenros, Free State. Gogo Matlepe, who was celebrated by her community at her home in Kokosi, is a mother of 11 children, 5 daughters and 6 sons.

MEC Mazibuko joined 93 elderly citizens, aged between 80 and 100, to honour Gogo Matlepe and to learn from her the secret to longevity.

"To have an elder living for over a century is truly priceless. We came to celebrate Mama Matlepe's life and to express our gratitude to her family for their loving care over the years. Today, we wanted to tap into her well of wisdom and uncover the secrets to her long life," said Mazibuko.

She encouraged young people to follow in Gogo Matlepe's footsteps, emphasising the importance of responsibility and good citizenship.

As part of the celebration, MEC Mazibuko presented Gogo Matlepe with a certificate of honour, a wheelchair, a blanket, toiletries, and further symbolising the government's commitment to the well-being of senior citizens.

"We take pride in the lives of our elderly, and their presence makes us even prouder as a society. We continue to promote love within families and communities to protect and care for older persons. Sadly, we've witnessed too many instances of elder abuse and neglect, which sometimes even result in tragic deaths. It is our collective responsibility to safeguard and cherish our elders. Their wisdom and life experiences are invaluable," Mazibuko added.

The family expressed deep gratitude for the government's recognition and the special celebration of Gogo Matlepe's remarkable life.
