The Special Investigative Unit (SIU) has identified two Gauteng Department of Health officials who allegedly enabled and facilitated COVID-19 PPE procurement corruption in the province.

Addressing the media, during the weekly Provincial Command Council briefing, on Friday 7 August, Makhura said although one of the implicated officials had resigned, the provincial government would still pursue criminal charges against the official.   The other official was suspended by the Head of Department on Friday morning.

This  follows the provincial government's meeting with the SIU on Thursday 6 August, where they received an update regarding investigations into the COVID-19 procurement corruption.

"Based on the evidence so far, the SIU will be making referrals to other state institutions for action", said Makhura.

The fight against corruption in Gauteng has been bolstered with the announcement that the State Security Agency will investigate all Members of the Executive Council (MEC) including the Premier starting with effect from Tuesday 10 August 2020

"We are hoping that the SIU will complete their investigation in the next six to eight weeks.

"Part of the investigation is to ensure that there is no conflict of interest, and there is no one living beyond their means," said Makhura.
