Gauteng has administered more than 2.8 million COVID-19 jabs thus far.

Of these, 2.1 million were adults and 1.1 million of them have fully vaccinated.

Another milestone was the improvement in the number of males taking up the vaccine, which moved from 43% to 44.5%.

Premier David Makhura has welcomed these developments adding that they need to be sustained.

Vaccinations, he said, are the best tool that could help attain herd immunity and bring COVID-19 under control.

"Vaccination against COVID-19 is our best tool to prevent the spread of the disease and ensure the health and well-being of our province and the communities we serve," said Premier Makhura.

While the vaccination programme is gaining momentum, Gauteng Department of Health spokesperson Kwara Kekana said that government is not happy about the numbers.

Kekana appealed to people to stop spreading fake news as it scares off those who are willing to take the vaccine.

She also requests citizens not to spread fake news that contributes to the theories and misinformation.

"Scientific evidence confirms that vaccinated people stand a better chance of surviving Covid-19 than unvaccinated people. Therefore, we must all dispel the unfounded and misleading conspiracy theories about the vaccines and choose life by vaccinating," she added.

Meanwhile, the province recorded 513 new COVID -19 cases bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 898 668 as of 23 August 2021.
