The demolition and replacement of the existing Dr WK Du Plessis School for Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) in Springs, Ekurhuleni, is progressing well, with significant portions of work already completed. The outdated facilities are being replaced with a modern brick-and-mortar structure that fully complies with the standards of both the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE).

Once completed, the new school will accommodate 570 learners from Grade R to Grade 12 and will feature a fully equipped boarding facility.

The comprehensive scope of work includes the construction of classroom blocks, a library, science laboratories, an administration block, a refuse yard, a guardhouse, boys' and girls' hostels, a workshop, a multipurpose/dining hall, and extensive external works.

In line with government objectives, the project prioritizes the participation of previously disadvantaged individuals and contractors, as well as Affirmable Business Enterprises (ABEs), without compromising on quality or skills. Additionally, it incorporated skills training through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), which has been successfully implemented and completed.

As the project enters its final phases, emphasis remains on completing the external works and newly constructed blocks. With key milestones achieved and structural targets on track, the outlook for timely delivery remains positive, provided resources continue to be managed effectively during the closing stages.
