The Gauteng Provincial Government led by Gauteng Premier, David Makhura and MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure, Jacob Mamabolo on Thursday, 10 March 2022 met with investors and community to announce that work has already begun on 10km road which links Soshanguve, Ga-Rankuwa, Orchard City and Rosslyn to the N4 freeway.
The work by the Automotive Incubation Centre has started and the construction of the road is already at a design phase.
The construction of the K217 road, which runs from north to south between Soshanguve and the N4 highway will enable greater access into Rosslyn and unlock additional investment opportunities.
The road is a key catalyst project that forms part of the Tshwane Special Economic Zone and to be built to support the infrastructure at the City of Tshwane.
The visit comes after Premier Makhura's commitment during the State of the Province Address that all members of the executive will have to pay special attention to resolving service delivery challenges and find lasting solutions.
MEC Mamabolo said: "We will be bringing a road with an estimate maximum value of R600 Million, when we are done with the construction of the project, this will not only assist developers to start their work, but also shorten travel distances for motorists who currently had to drive a long way."
He said that since the road project was in design phase, an engineering firm would be appointed by next month to design the road.
A tender document would then be developed so that construction companies are given an opportunity to apply for the construction of the road.
Mamabolo said in the past this process would take years to complete but the department changed that with the implementation of a panel made up of engineering firms that do all the work's study to establish what would be needed for the construction to start, within a time frame.
Premier Makhura said Gauteng was now the biggest player in the automotive industry.
"The K217 road will pave way to the construction of new economic nodes such as the logistics hub, commercial and recreational nodes, and the community and facility nodes".
The Automotive Hub is already home to BMW South Africa, Nissan, Ford, and IVECO. The Investment project is valued at R42 billion and is estimated to create 59 513 jobs, over a period of 10-15 years.
The Tshwane Automotive City is a strategic infrastructure programme aimed to stimulate automotive vehicle assembly and component manufacturing in the Rosslyn region.
