Government committed to inclusive, sustainable economic growth that will create jobs- 12 November 2020

MEC for Economic Development, Agriculture, Environmental and Rural Development, Morakane Mosupyoe says with h the implementation of the economic recovery plan, the Gauteng Provincial Government remains committed to a programme of action that brings about inclusive and sustainable economic growth which will create jobs, under Growing Gauteng Together 2030 plan.

MEC Mosupyoe was addressing the media briefing on Thursday, 12 November 2020 in Ormonde following the Executive Council Lekgotla, that took place last week.

"It is an infrastructure-led plan that aims to grow and build the economy, bring about transformation, create jobs and foster greater economic inclusivity," said Mosupyoe. 

She noted that the construction of Tshwane Automotive phase 1 of the development would accommodate six investors, with an additional pipeline of 18 interested investors.

The City of Tshwane has acquired land to accommodate an additional 7 investors. Total Investment by investors increased from R2.46 Billion to R4,33 billion. 

Gauteng's economy is estimated to have contracted by an annualised -53% in Quarter 2 of 2020 owing to Covid-19, with the pandemic and the lockdown having resulted in a jobs bloodbath due to company closures and overall economic inactivity.

In the second quarter of 2020, the country and the province lost 2.2 million and 661 thousand jobs, respectively.

"As custodians of economic growth and development in a province which is regarded as the economic powerhouse of the country, GDED and its agencies was at the forefront of the provincial economic response to Covid-19," she said.

In addition, she noted that with regard to Township Economy, the local content and production framework had been developed to promote consumption of locally produced goods and grant SMMEs direct access to market through procurement, part of government's investment in developing and enhancing the productive capacity of the township economy.

The MEC said the department would establish global business services (GBS) hubs and clusters within township communities to create 10 000 jobs. 

"So far, we have completed a Gauteng GBS Market Study and Gauteng Value Proposition to enhance the marketability of Gauteng as a premier outsourcing destination, in partnership with BPESA (Business Processes Enabling South Africa). The draft study and value proposition were shared with investors from the US, UK, Australia and India," she said.
