Restrictions on economic activity lifted as the country moves to level 2 - 17 August 2020

President,Cyril Ramaphosa on Saturday, 15 August, addressed the nation on the developments of South Africa's risk adjusted strategy to manage the spread of COVID-19.

South Africa moved to Level 2 of the nationwide lockdown on Tuesday,18 August, which saw most economic activity resume under strict enforcement of social distancing, wearing of masks and physical distancing.

"The virus appears to have peaked in several provinces, including the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Gauteng and possibly KwaZulu-Natal," said Ramaphosa.

According to the daily COVID-19 statistics released by the Department of Health, Gauteng, has seen a steady decline in the number of new confirmed COVID-19 infections. The downward trend has been attributed to non-pharmaceutical interventions such as wearing of masks, washing of hands and adherence to social distancing practiced by members of the public.

However, the President warned that the fight against the pandemic, was not over  and people should not become complacent as the country could face a resurgence.

"No gatherings of more than 50 people will be permitted, this includes includes funerals and religious events. Spectators will not be permitted at sporting events," he said.

President Ramaphosa said government will announce a new tool to support government's digital contact tracing efforts in the coming days.

"In addition to manual contact tracing and the national WhatsApp channel, a mobile application will be used to notify contacts more quickly while preserving their privacy and anonymity," he added.
