Prof Gita Naidu who is the Head of Paediatric Oncology at CHBAH, Academic Head of Paediatric Oncology at the University of the Witwatersrand and Chair of South African Association of Paediatric Haematology Oncology speaks on the most common type of leukaemia in children which is lymphoblastic leukaemia. The exact cause of the disease in children is not known. There are certain conditions passed on from parents to children (inherited) that increase the risk for childhood leukaemia, but most childhood leukaemia is not inherited. The risk factors of leukaemia in children are exposure to high levels radiation, inherited symptoms such as down syndrome and li- fraumeni syndrome or identical twin with leukaemia.
