The Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko will tomorrow (31 October) lead a World Sight Day event under the theme: “Love the Eyes of a child," which aims to raise awareness about the importance of protecting children’s eyes and vision care. The MEC will also handover spectacles to school children and observe a Paediatric Surgery being performed at St. John Eye Hospital.

According to World Health Organisation, reducing screen time and spending time outside can protect children from developing short-sightedness (myopia).

World Sight Day is an annual health awareness day that serves as a reminder to prioritise eye health by conducting eye tests every two years, taking preventative measures such as digital screen breaks in between the activities.

Members of the media are invited as follows:

Date: Thursday, 31 October 2024

Time: 08:00

Venue: Phillip Kushlick Special School inside Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic hospital in Soweto

Media RSPVs and interview requests should be directed to Ms Andisiwe Ciya on 072 564 0307. Ends// Issued by the Gauteng Department of Health
