MEC Maile to host journalists on a media tour regarding Gauteng Energy Response 

MEC for Human Settlements and Infrastructure Development, Hon. Lebogang Maile (MPL), will host a Media Tour for journalists and media houses next week Tuesday 23 April 2024, City of Johannesburg, Gauteng province. Gauteng, as an economic hub of the country, has been severely impacted by the power outages or load shedding, thus leading to several jobs being shed in various sectors of the economy, including service delivery provision severely impacted. As part of the GGT2030 objective, the Provincial Government, has placed itself as a major player in mitigating the impact of the energy crisis. During the State of the Province Address (SoPA), Premier Panyaza Lesufi made the following commitment: “the protracted electricity crisis has caused significant hardships for people in our province and has had a detrimental effect on the growth of Gauteng’s economy. Power shortages have a negative impact on the availability of healthcare services, food and water, the level of crime, and unemployment rate”. He further posited; “after extensive consultation with the energy sector, we developed an energy crisis response plan in collaboration with the national energy committee, local government, and energy experts. This was followed by the announcement of R1,2bn in funding that we made during SoPA”. The Gauteng’s Department of Infrastructure Development (DID) as a custodian of the province’s infrastructure projects and implementing agency, was tasked with the immense responsibility to deliver infrastructure measures as a broad strategy framework to insulate the province from the ongoing energy crisis. It is within this context that MEC Maile, acting on behalf of Government, invites media houses and journalists, as he showcases the collective work by the current ANC-led administration. Before the site visits, a Technical Briefing, will be held behind closed doors. Such a briefing will entail the following: (1) Government spending, (2) number of jobs created, and skills transferred, (3) number of the project sites, (4) impact of the project and (5) future plans. The sites to be visited are as follows: • Lillian Ngoyi Community Health Centre • Lenasia Clinic • Lenasia South Community Health Centre • Mofolo Community Health Centre The details of the Technical Briefing led by MEC Maile, followed by project site visits will take place as follows: DATE: Tuesday 23 April 2024 TIME: 09H15 for 09h30am VENUE: Lillian Ngoyi CHC, Chris Hani Road, Diepkloof, Zone 6, SOWETO Given the above synopsis we request in kind that a designated journalist joins the MEC’s Tour, on Tuesday 23 April 2023, to experience the work undertaken by Gauteng Government (GPG) in mitigating the impact of power outages in public health services and other related sectors.
