Mr Bongani Ngomane is the new Acting Head of Department for the Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD) with effect from May for the next six months as announced by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, last week.
Ngomane is a seasoned public servant and administrator having worked for government for the past 22 years. In 1998 he was appointed as Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Tourism and Economic Development at Ekurhuleni Municipality until 2002. From 2002 to 2007, he served as Director for Land Management at Gauteng Department Local Government, now known as Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, E-Government, Research and Development (COGTA)  
In 2008 he joined the Gauteng Department of Social Development as Chief Director responsible for Regions and Institutions and later headed the Stakeholder Management, Research and Population Development.      
Ngomane also lectured Public Administration and Local Government at Regent Business School from 2022 to 2023.
He was recently appointed part-time Commissioner for Gender Equality from March 2023–to date by President Cyril Ramaphosa. He has been acting Deputy Director General (DDG) for Social Welfare at the department since March 2024 – to date. 
He also coordinated the Development of Social Infrastructure, Budget, and Performance monitoring in Inter-Governmental Relations on local government by-laws relating to indigent policies, early childhood development & social relief for  distress.
As Chief Director he was also responsible for the development of policies for the department and monitor implementation. He also oversees and lead the Gauteng Men and Boys Programme.
Ngomane holds a Masters in Management (Entrepreneurship) from Wits University and Hons in Public Administration and Management from University of Stellenbosch.
